The ex-cop, identified as Ruoro, worked with a gang, some of whose members have since been killed or arrested, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Ruoro first attracted police attention during a bank robbery in Matuu in July 2021, when his gang of five stole an unspecified amount of cash and two AK47 rifles from the officers on duty.
The incident prompted a probe to neutralize the gang where one rifle was recovered. The second rifle was discovered during an operation that led to Ruoro’s arrest in the Takaungu area of Kilifi County.
“Preliminary investigations have so far linked him to 9 robbery incidents reported in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Machakos counties,” read a statement from DCI.
Ruoro is now being processed for arraignment as a manhunt to apprehend more gang members who are still at large.
